Meet John Mangieri

John Mangieri

John serves as the Storm Baseball Academy's Director of College Recruiting and coordinates player participation in showcases as well as organizing the Storm's own showcase. He also serves as one of the Academy's lead pitching instructors.

Mangieri has played with the Storm 8 years and coached the last two seasons with the Junior Storm. He is also the coach of Archbishop Molloy High School since 2007. In 2009, as coach of the Storm's 17u team, his team to the 2009 LIBA Fall Championship and took his summer team to the NABF Regionals in Virginia where they posted a 3-1 record. His team compiled a 34-14 mark in the summer and fall.

As a player, Mangieri was drafted by the Mets in the 11th round of the 1997 draft during his junior campaign at St. Francis College and played in the Mets organization from 1997-2000. He also played minor league baseball with the Reds (2003) and the Marlins (2006). Between organizations, John played in the Atlantic League where he was an All-Star with the Atlantic City Surf (2001), and also had stints with Bridgeport and Pennsylvania (2001-02). He also played international ball with the San Marino Titans of the Italian League (2002, '04 & '05), Team Italy in the World Baseball Classic (2006), the Tawainese League (2005) and the European Cup (2002, 2005). He received the Cy Award in 2002 in Barcelona, Spain and was named 2004 Italia Cup MVP. He was also selected to the 40-man roster of the Italian Olympic team ('04).

Mangieri has also gained a lot of coaching experience by the managers he played for. Many were former MLB coaches and players: Sparky Lyle, Mitch "Wild Thing" Williams (currently of MLB Network), Tommy Helms, John Franco, Bob Stanley, Tim Naehring, Wayne Rosenthal (Florida Marlins Pitching Coordinator), Al Jackson (NY Mets Pitching Coordinator), Jose "Chico" Lind and Butch Hobson. As a player, Mangieri had numerous MLB teammates including Mike Piazza, Frank Catalanotto, John Franco, Jason Grilli, Frank Menchino, A.J. Burnett, Jeremy Hermida, Jason Isringhausen, Rickey Henderson, Rick Vandenhurk, Todd Hundley, and Austin Kearns

Mangieri's career highlights include striking out former MLB slugger Jose Canseco during his '01 campaign and recording the last out against Kendry Morales (Angels) while earning the save in the Storm's upset victory of Team Cuba in Havana in 2003.

Mangieri attended St. Francis College on a full scholarship and was the school's highest drafted player ever. He served as the school's first junior captain and earned a degree in Physical Education. He currently works at Massapequa High School and also founded Lucky 13 Baseball LLC - Independent Recruiting Service.

He attended Archbishop Molloy High School and was named the MVP of the City Championship in 1994 with a stellar 2 double-4 RBI-game-winning RBI at Yankee Stadium.

Mangieri grew up and still resides in Howard Beach with his wife Graziella.
